A Crystalline Effigy of Mythic Repute : The Mitchell-Hedges Lubaantun Skull.
This is a Triptych of works debuting at ART BASEL MIAMI 2010
rystalline Cranium of Mesoamerican conception. The iconography of the Human Skeleton has long since passed from the shrouds of mysticism to the banal light of modern commercialism. Skulls can be found on everything from Condoms to Chocolates :-/ At some point in our not too distant past however the Skull represented something otherworldly - something evocative of our own Mortality, our own selves stripped of sinew and flesh, leaving only a bleached white, bone super structure.
This TRIPTYCH is a series of works dedicated to the LUBAANTUN Crystal Skull.
I consider the Mitchell-Hedges Skull to be an Antecedent to Hirst's quintessentially post-modern work "For The Love of GOD." Before we had Diamond Bedazzled Dome Pieces, we had this...
