It is the year 5770 : Let these letters speak with permanence.
Averice and Zealotry, the beginning and the end, The Alpha and The Zeta ζ...
A pre-emptive look at a new Caslon Revival Typeface designed by me.

e are at the beginning of something new. This is the year 5770 according to the Jewish calendar, and yet even though I consider myself to be firmly planted in the year 2010 - I can't help but wonder where we'll be in the coming Æons. I can't help but wonder if my humble works will be discovered, in my lifetime - or perhaps afterwards, well afterwards, by an aesthete not much unlike myself - but born of a different era. What will letterforms have Evolved or Devolved into by then?
Let this be the shape of things to come

I'm currently wrapping up drawing the last 5 or so letterforms and alternates...
Hopefully I'll be able to share this with you before the year 5771 rolls around.

k2 x svsv

SERUM VERSUS VENOM & K2 SNOWBOARDS
A collaboration born of innovation and bred for summits and slopes of this earth.
K2 and SVSV present : the 33° Degrees Collection : WINTER MMXI

This has been over a year in the making... K2 snowboards approached our brand Serum vs Venom to create a capsule collection that would collide the independent ethos of our line with the technical innovation of K2.

I've personally never been much of an action sports enthusiast ( just running the streets if Brooklyn can be dangerous enough ) but that didn't stop me from setting out to design the best boards, boots, bindings and a few outerwear pieces possible for this collection.

In the end, what was created were hand-crafted, ink and calligraphic inspired topsheets for a series of 8 different boards.

A whole iconography was created for this collaboration which we entitled : 33degrees ( to elaborate, water freezes at 32° Farenheit - 33° degrees signifies the instant before change, before transformation.)

Keep watch as the collection is slated to hit the slopes this winter. Stay tuned for more.

basel triptych

From the Mayan Ruins of Lubaantun:
A Crystalline Effigy of Mythic Repute : The Mitchell-Hedges Lubaantun Skull
.
This is a Triptych of works debuting at ART BASEL MIAMI 2010

rystalline Cranium of Mesoamerican conception. The iconography of the Human Skeleton has long since passed from the shrouds of mysticism to the banal light of modern commercialism. Skulls can be found on everything from Condoms to Chocolates :-/ At some point in our not too distant past however the Skull represented something otherworldly - something evocative of our own Mortality, our own selves stripped of sinew and flesh, leaving only a bleached white, bone super structure.

This TRIPTYCH is a series of works dedicated to the LUBAANTUN Crystal Skull.
I consider the Mitchell-Hedges Skull to be an Antecedent to Hirst's quintessentially post-modern work "For The Love of GOD." Before we had Diamond Bedazzled Dome Pieces, we had this...

memory of mickey

The Rise of an Animated Hegemony and its Rodentian Dictator:
or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Mickey Mouse.
.

hildhood and impression go hand in hand. I grew up surrounded by the dream of Disney. Some of my earliest Artistic Memories are of myself drawing characters from the DISNEY line-up. I remember particularly liking to draw Mickey and characters from the Jungle Book. Disney and it's iconography undoubtedly hold a cultural sway over the minds ( and hearts ) of millions; myself included.

I know that throughout the decades Mickey and his animated cohorts have propagated sexist, bigoted, conservative, colonial, consumer-centric, xenophobic and even racist agendas via countless cartoons and assorted media. Yet somehow, through the undoubted Hegemony of Disney, the Image Endures. In my mind this Rodentine Tramp is Iconic... Mickey is the stuff dreams are made of. His spherical Ears and Oblong Head emblazoned on my childhood memories like a logo.

I offer you this re-visioning of a mouse that is so much more... His pose arrogant and cornucopian. He is resplendent and pregnant with possibility. I've paid homage by scribing his form as more poetic, and lyrical than sharply defined. This is an ode to his permanence. This one goes out to my ninja Mickey...
